Same hour, fifty kilometers south. A one-bedroom apartment in Mountain View. Michael (28, pseudonym) sits in front of his laptop. His screen shows not a dashboard but a LinkedIn application form. Six months ago he was laid off as a junior software engineer at a tech startup. Since then he has applied to 237 job postings. Twelve callbacks. Three final-round interviews. Zero offers.
The two graduated from Stanford's computer science department in the same year, took the same classes, worked on the same projects, and spent their first three years after graduation at the same company.
The difference is not ability. It is the question each asked two years ago when they encountered a new tool called AI. Sophia asked: If this tool can handle parts of my work, what will I do? Michael reacted: This tool is going to take my job.
The questions sound alike, but they point in opposite directions. Sophia's question aimed at leverage. Michael's aimed at defense. Two years later, their mornings look like this.

A generation called AI-native has emerged. It is defined not by age but by mindset. The scale of leverage these people command is something no previous era's discerning class has possessed. Whether the democratization of that leverage translates into the democratization of outcomes is an entirely different question.
Section A: AI-Native — A Mindset, Not a Generation
A Problem of Definition
"AI-native" is a term that invites misunderstanding. Like "digital native," it sounds as though it refers to a cohort born into a particular era and raised alongside AI. In this chapter, the term is defined differently.
An AI-native is someone who uses generative AI the way most people use internet search — not as a specialized skill but as a default tool. Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, and Midjourney are infrastructure whose absence they can hardly imagine, much as someone who grew up after the mid-1990s cannot imagine daily life without the internet.
There is, however, a critical difference. Using the internet and leveraging AI require fundamentally different modes of thinking. The internet retrieves and connects information; AI receives cognitive tasks and executes them on your behalf. The ability to design that delegation relationship is the essence of the AI-native.
AI-native status is therefore not determined by age. A 40-year-old attorney who uses Harvey AI to automate 70% of her contract review is AI-native. A 25-year-old developer who fears AI and insists on writing every line by hand is not. Sophia was 28, but what mattered more was the direction of the question she asked.
The AI-native mindset compresses into three core capabilities.
First, prompt literacy. Knowing what to ask AI and how to ask it. This is not a matter of typing; it is the ability to structure a problem. Third, leverage design. The ability to decide which tasks to delegate to AI and which to retain. Delegate everything and quality collapses. Retain everything and leverage vanishes. Drawing that boundary with precision is the defining competence of an AI-native.
None of these three capabilities is taught in school. They are acquired through trial and error in real-world practice. The practical implication is clear: AI-native is a matter of mindset, not generation. Until the education system codifies this mindset, the capability depends on individual self-teaching and experimentation, just as public education took decades to absorb the demands of the Industrial Revolution.
The Commoditization of Code
Cursor illustrates the shift most vividly.
Cursor is an AI-powered coding environment built by Anysphere Inc., a San Francisco startup. It is not a simple autocomplete tool. AI comprehends an entire codebase, converses with the developer in natural language, and generates, modifies, and debugs code.
As of 2025, Cursor's annual recurring revenue (ARR) reached $1 billion. More than half of Fortune 500 companies use Cursor. Of the pull requests generated within those companies, 35% are now created automatically by AI agents, a figure confirmed by Bessemer Venture Partners.
The implication: more than a third of code changes produced by Fortune 500 development teams are no longer written by humans. Developers still exist, but their role has shifted: from writing code to reviewing code written by AI, designing system architecture, and providing business context.
"In the past, the ability to write code was the developer's value. Now it's the ability to evaluate AI-written code and design systems." Cursor users say this repeatedly. Code-writing ability has been commoditized. That diagnosis fits Michael's problem precisely. He competed on his ability to write code, and AI turned that ability into a commodity.
The number behind the number matters more. Cursor's team is 50 people, influencing the development workflow of more than half the Fortune 500 and generating $1 billion in annual revenue. Revenue per employee: $20 million. What that figure means is the subject of the next section.
Look again at Michael's failure. He applied to 237 postings. Twelve callbacks. A callback rate of 5%. The positions he applied for (junior software engineer) are the roles AI replaces first and fastest. Companies subscribe to Cursor instead of hiring junior developers. He named specific models he found promising: proprietary trading, developer tools, AI-agent-driven customer service that replaces entire departments. A single human performing the work of a team of dozens, augmented by AI.
The statement sounds like hyperbole, but the numbers support it. When Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion in 2012, Instagram had 13 employees, celebrated as the most extreme leverage event in history. The leverage of the AI era goes far beyond it.
Return to Sophia's case. She is a one-person company. At $45,000 a month, her annualized revenue is $540,000. Her tool costs are $300 a month. Translated into human labor equivalents, she alone produces at the level of ten people by prior standards. More precisely, AI handles the work that once required ten people, and Sophia focuses on what AI cannot do: client relationships, complex judgment, service design.
To grasp how historically unprecedented this is, we need to trace the history of leverage.
Three Stages of Leverage
Recall the discerning figures traced in Volume 1. When Richard Arkwright introduced the water frame in 1769, he found leverage in a physical machine. A single spinning frame replaced hundreds of handloom weavers. But that leverage was physical: it required owning a machine, erecting a factory building, and securing a site beside a river. It was capital-intensive and geographically fixed.
When Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, leverage shifted to the platform. A single server farm replaced thousands of bookstores. This leverage was digital, the barrier to entry lower than for a physical factory, but it still required billions of dollars in infrastructure investment, and only first movers who captured network effects became winners.
Between 2024 and 2025, leverage entered a third stage: the API call. Claude API, GPT-4o API, Gemini API. Anyone can access state-of-the-art AI for a few dozen dollars a month. The transformation parallels how the factory gave way to utilities like electricity and running water. Acquiring leverage no longer requires owning a factory or building a platform. You connect to a platform someone else has already built.
Call it the dematerialization of leverage: from land to factory, from factory to server, from server to API call. The materiality of leverage is being progressively annihilated.

What Anthropic's Growth Tells Us
Anthropic's growth trajectory is the financial expression of this shift. The leap from $1 billion ARR at the end of 2024 to $14 billion by February 2026 is not merely corporate success. It is a signal that enterprises have moved from experimenting with AI to embedding AI as infrastructure.
When companies subscribe to Claude, they are not adopting new software. They are outsourcing a portion of their cognitive labor force to an API. Anthropic's ARR growth means the scale of that outsourcing expanded fourteen-fold in a single year.
Set this growth against Anthropic's headcount and the reality of extreme leverage becomes clear. Roughly 4,000 Anthropic employees generate $14 billion in ARR. Revenue per head: $3.5 million. That system provides cognitive leverage to developers at Fortune 500 companies, and revenue flows from the process.
Comparing this with China's AI discerning class makes the global nature of the phenomenon clear. As of 2025, nine of the top ten global open-weight models were Chinese-made (ChinaTalk, specific benchmark basis). DeepSeek, Alibaba's Qwen, ByteDance's Doubao. The teams behind these models are themselves discerning figures wielding extreme leverage. DeepSeek's training cost was roughly $6 million — a fraction of what comparable U.S. models required. The rise of the AI-native generation is not a Silicon Valley phenomenon. This chapter, however, dissects it within the American context.

Understanding the structure that makes extreme leverage possible requires examining its layers.

Leverage has merely migrated from "factory ownership" to "API access permission." The hierarchy of power still exists. Only its apex has shifted — from factory owner to API provider.
Structurally, this mirrors the analysis of Crassus in Volume 1. Crassus ran Rome's private fire brigade, buying buildings at distressed prices from owners watching their properties burn. He exercised power by controlling the infrastructure that prevented fires: the fire service itself. Anthropic and OpenAI exercise economic power by controlling the infrastructure of cognitive labor: the AI API. The form differs, but the mechanism is identical: power flows from infrastructure control.
Cursor as Proof: The Archetype of the API-Era Discerning
Cursor illustrates this structure best. Cursor's team does not train its own AI models. It builds its service by calling Anthropic's Claude via API. Cursor is a Layer 3 player, operating atop the infrastructure created by Layer 1 (NVIDIA) and Layer 2 (Anthropic), building a tool that delivers leverage to developers.
The API-era discerning operates on precisely this model. They do not own infrastructure; they utilize it. They do not build the foundation; they build on top of it. The barrier to entry for this model is low, but the difficulty of differentiation remains high. Anyone can use the Claude API, but building a development tool used by half the Fortune 500 from it is another matter entirely.
There is a takeaway here for Korean readers. At which layer should Korea's aspiring discerning compete? At Layer 1 (hardware), Samsung and SK hynix are competing with HBM semiconductors. Telling him to "learn ChatGPT and become AI-native" is structurally identical to telling an unemployed Lancashire handloom weaver in 1835 to "learn the steam engine and become a factory technician." Formally correct. Practically impossible — he lacks the time, the capital, the network, and the domain knowledge to apply it.
Within the United States, geographic inequality reinforces this structure. The AI-native ecosystem is concentrated in the Bay Area (60% of AI venture capital), New York, Seattle, and Austin. In Cleveland, Toledo, and Youngstown, this ecosystem does not exist. Sophia's seat in the Mission District is not a coincidence.
Three Types of the Discerning
Not all discerning figures of the AI era take the same form. Three types differ in the scale of economic returns and the paths of access.
Type A: Platform Builders
Those who build the AI tools themselves: Anthropic, OpenAI, Cursor. They wield the most extreme leverage. Anthropic's 4,000 employees generate $14 billion in ARR; Cursor's 50 generate $1 billion. Type B: Leverage Users
Those like Sophia who use AI tools to perform, as an individual or small team, work that previously required a large team. Their economic rewards are lower than those of Types A and B, but they secure discerning status while retaining the safety net of organizational employment.
All three types are "discerning," yet the economic returns they capture differ dramatically. Type A creates enterprise value in the tens of billions. Type B earns hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars as a one-person company. Type C earns a premium within existing salary structures.
Access to all three types is not equally open.
The Demography of the Discerning
The geographic and social distribution of AI-natives illustrates the unevenness of opportunity with stark clarity.
The Bay Area houses the world's densest AI-native ecosystem. Stanford, UC Berkeley, and MIT graduates know one another, invest in one another's startups, and become one another's customers. Some of Sophia's earliest clients were law firms where her Stanford classmates worked. Without that network, her initial trajectory would have been far more difficult.
The educational pathways to becoming discerning are diversifying, but outcomes differ by pathway. A Stanford CS degree is the fastest route into Type A. A three-to-six-month coding bootcamp is viable for entering Type C as an organizational integrator, but often insufficient for launching the high-leverage businesses of Type A or Type B.
A self-taught path also exists. People have acquired AI-native capabilities through YouTube, Coursera, and fast.ai on their own. Among those who reached Sophia-level leverage through this path, however, most possessed preexisting domain expertise — in medicine, law, finance, or another field. AI ability without a domain struggles to find footing as a Type B discerning.
The Reality of Democratization
One set of numbers captures the gap between the democratization of opportunity and the democratization of outcomes better than any other.
Global billionaire wealth stood at $18.3 trillion in 2025, a 16% year-over-year increase, three times the five-year average growth rate. Billionaires control eight of the top ten AI companies. The wealth-growth gap between the top 1% and the bottom 50% is 2,655 to 1. These figures come from Oxfam's 2025 report.
"Anyone can use ChatGPT" and "the economic fruits of the AI era have been democratized" are entirely different propositions. The former is true; the latter, for now, is not.
Even so, the decline in the entry cost of leverage is a structural change. Replicating Arkwright's discerning status in 1769 required tens of thousands of pounds. Replicating Sophia's discerning status in 2025 requires $300 a month. The number of people who can afford $300 is incomparably larger than those who could afford Arkwright's entry ticket. But affording $300 and possessing Sophia's Stanford degree, legal domain knowledge, and Bay Area network are different matters.
That is the substance of the proposition: the democratization of opportunity does not guarantee the democratization of outcomes.

The shape of the discerning changes with each era.
Rome's discerning figure was Crassus. He bought buildings at distressed prices from owners of wooden insulae burning in fires, rebuilt them, and rented them out. His leverage lay in the eye that spotted crisis and the ability to mobilize capital. The material basis of that leverage was real estate and cash.
The Industrial Revolution's discerning figure was Arkwright. He read the potential of the water frame and designed a factory system around it. His leverage lay in the machine and the ability to organize labor. The material basis was the factory and its machinery.
The internet era's discerning figure was Bezos. He read that the internet would reshape distribution and designed a platform system. His leverage lay in network effects and logistics optimization. The material basis was the server farm and the warehouse.
The AI era's discerning figure is Sophia. She read that AI could handle legal cognitive labor and designed a service system. Her leverage lies in the combination of AI proficiency and legal domain knowledge. The material basis is a laptop and an API subscription.
Line these four figures up and a pattern emerges. The leverage of the discerning has grown more dematerialized with each era. From Crassus to Arkwright, from Arkwright to Bezos, from Bezos to Sophia. The share of physical assets shrinks while the share of cognitive capability and systems design expands.
But where there is a pattern, there is also a reversal. The material basis of leverage has not vanished; it has migrated from individual ownership to shared infrastructure. Sophia does not own GPUs, but she depends on Anthropic's GPUs. Crassus owned his buildings outright. Sophia accesses an API. The dematerialization of leverage is not the disappearance of leverage. It is the delegation of leverage.
Three Eras of the Discerning
Viewed through the "productivity explosion" framework introduced in Volume 1, each era's discerning profile reflects that era's mode of productivity explosion.
Rome's productivity explosion was scale. Imperial-scale military power and road networks drove productivity upward. The discerning were those who exploited that scale.
The Industrial Revolution's productivity explosion was the machine. Steam engines and looms raised the productivity of physical labor. The discerning were those who owned and organized the machines.
The AI era's productivity explosion is cognition. Large language models are raising the productivity of cognitive labor. The discerning are those who design and deploy this cognitive leverage.
Volume 1 treated the discerning primarily as a capitalist class that owned and designed systems. Crassus owned a firefighting system. Arkwright owned a factory system. Their discerning status presupposed the ability to mobilize capital.
The AI era's discerning need not own systems. They can connect to an API. This is the personalization of the discerning. In the past, discerning status was the exclusive province of the capitalist class. Now, a laptop and $300 a month can make someone a small-scale discerning.
Yet this personalization does not eliminate the structural divergence between the discerning and the displaced. It makes the layers of that divergence more complex. In the past, the divide ran between those who had capital and those who did not. In the AI era, it runs between those who possess the AI-native mindset and those who do not, those who hold domain expertise and those who do not, those who have networks and those who do not. The criterion of divergence has shifted from capital to capability and connection. Whether that shift is more equitable is a separate question.
The core formula holds in the AI era: technology → capital concentration → social instability → institutional redesign. What has changed is speed. Anthropic grew from $1 billion to $14 billion in ARR in fourteen months. Carnegie Steel took decades to achieve a comparable leap.
Signals of the third stage — social instability — are already visible. In 2025, 55,000 workers were laid off directly due to AI. In the first two months of 2026, tech companies laid off 32,000. These are not just numbers; they are warnings — leading indicators of what happens before large-scale AI displacement truly begins. Ford's CEO said, "AI will replace half of white-collar jobs." The Education Problem
There is a paradox in the fact that education does not play a decisive role in forming the AI-native mindset. Sophia and Michael received the same Stanford CS education. Sophia became AI-native. Michael did not.
The difference formed outside the curriculum. After graduation, Sophia worked at a small legal-tech startup. This is partly an individual matter and partly a matter of environment. Which organization you belong to, who you work alongside, what kinds of failure you can absorb — these determine whether the transition to AI-native occurs. And these conditions are not evenly distributed.
The more structural problem is the lag in public education. American high schools and universities do not yet systematically teach the AI-native mindset. "Learning about AI" dominates the curriculum, not "learning to leverage AI." Just as the public education system took decades to teach the steam engine during the Industrial Revolution, the overhaul of education for the AI era has begun but has far to go.

If Anthropic and OpenAI represent Type A discerning (platform builders) in the United States, their Chinese counterparts are DeepSeek, Alibaba, and ByteDance. Outcomes have not. For the extreme leverage wielded by the AI era's discerning to convert into benefits for society as a whole, institutions that absorb and redistribute the changes wrought by technology are necessary. If those institutions fail, Sophia's success and Michael's failure cease to be individual stories and become structural ones.
